Feb 2024 – Getting Ready for Spring

Although we are just at the start of February, the first signs of Spring are already emerging across the borough. Hounslow Highways horticultural teams are also getting ready – charging their electric strimmers, testing the leaf blowers, checking their mowers and tending to the new plants grown in their on-site nursery.

At Hounslow Highways, all the horticultural services are delivered with in-house expert and experienced teams.  For example, three dedicated grass cutting teams, working in East, Central and West Hounslow, maintain around 380,000 m2 of green space, which is like cutting nearly 55 football pitches!

But it isn’t all about cutting back, the team is growing and improving the Borough’s green spaces. Normally, grass cutting takes place between March and October which is the peak growing season for grass, and as soon as one full round of grass cutting is complete, another starts, until the end of the season. For the past few years, the team has taken part in No Mow May – which gives many native flowers an opportunity to shine and supports the habitat of local species during that month.

The grass-cutting teams are proud to improve the Borough’s green spaces; their efforts keep the verges neat and in good condition, improving the look of the grass and helping to control weeds. And keeping the grass shorter improves visibility at junctions and at the side of the carriageways. All of which is key to keeping residents, pedestrians and other road users safe.

We hope you appreciate their work as much as Hounslow Highways do as they start to emerge into Spring over coming weeks and months!
