A bright future

We will be replacing all the street lighting in the borough by 2016.

More than 16,000 street lights will be converted to energy-saving and carbon-efficient LED lamps. The lighting will be much brighter and won’t need as much maintenance.

We know that street lighting is very important to residents, businesses and visitors alike. Good, reliable lighting not only makes it safer for road-users and pedestrians, but also has a positive effect on crime detection and reducing the fear of crime.

We’ll be able to control the lighting levels and the times when lighting is on from a central computer system for individual streets. This will help us all continue to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, while also providing street lighting to meet the needs of each individual neighbourhood.

As you’ll appreciate, this is a mammoth task. Some neighbourhoods will be completed before others, so don’t worry if you think a particular area has been missed out – we’ll get to all areas as soon as we can.

We’re almost finished

We are working hard to install the new LED street lights as soon as possible.

So far, we have installed more than 14,000 of the borough’s 16,000 street lights.

Streets programmed to receive heritage-style lighting can expect to see them installed in 2016.
