Hounslow Highways Welcomes West Thames College’s Best Business Student of 2025, Dmytro Horlov, for a Week of Work Experience

Last month, we celebrated Dmryto Horlov, who was awarded the Best Business Student of the Year 2025, at the West Thames College Student Awards. We were thrilled to be asked to present the award to Dmytro, and we offered him a week of work experience at Hounslow Highways. Dmytro just finished his time with us, and his feedback was fantastic for us to hear!

“I was honoured to be chosen as the Student of the Year, which gave me the amazing opportunity to complete a one-week work placement at Hounslow Highways.

During the placement, I had the chance to work across several key departments, including Customer Services, Finance, and the Operational Hub. I also took part in site visits with different teams, such as the street lighting crew and the team responsible for managing trees across the borough. This gave me a broader understanding of how different parts of the company work together to maintain and improve the local environment.

As a business student, I was happy to find that I could apply some of the skills I have learned and developed in college. My analytical thinking helped me understand how departments operate and solve different issues. At college, I learnt how to create profit and loss accounts, and seeing how the company used the same principles helped me understand how businesses manage their finances in real life.

Out of all the departments, I enjoyed working with Finance the most. This experience confirmed my interest in this field, and strengthened my passion for pursuing a career in it. After this placement, I feel even more motivated to study finance and accounting at university in the future.

Previously, I didn’t fully understand how businesses deal with customer complaints and how important it is to deliver a good service to the public. It was very interesting to see how the Customer Services team communicates with local residents and handles different situations with professionalism.

Overall, my experience at Hounslow Highways was really positive. I gained practical experience and developed a better understanding of how a real business operates. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and would recommend a placement like this to any student who wants to learn more about the working world.”
